Dear Friend, November 3 is just 50 days away. With National Voter Registration Day tomorrow, now is a good time to make sure you’re registered and start making your voting plan for the 2026 general election. Maryland voters can vote early from October 22–29, by mail, or on Election Day, November 3. The deadline to register online or by mail is October 13, and same-day registration is available during early voting and on Election Day with proof of residence.
Whether you’re voting for the first time or have voted for years, take a few minutes to check your registration, learn what’s on your ballot, and decide when and how you’ll vote. The State Board of Elections has all the dates, deadlines, registration information, polling locations, and mail-in voting resources you need.
We’ll also be sharing more information about our 2026 endorsements soon, so keep an eye out for updates as we head toward November 3.
Meanwhile, our allies at CASA have filed a federal lawsuit challenging ICE’s practice of warrantless immigration arrests in Maryland. Progressive Maryland joined CASA and its partners at last week’s press conference announcing the lawsuit, which seeks to protect due process and constitutional rights. Read on for important updates, lots of upcoming events, and state and national news you can use.

MD struggles to compensate for federal health care cuts -- it's News You Can Use Scraping for $, dumping $
A state budget shortfall (estimated) of nearly $3 billion next year is not leaving much room for the state to help the most vulnerable, either with healthcare costs climbing like kudzu or keeping students' university system costs under control and fully funding the Blueprint for school improvement. Maryland teachers will wince at hard-pressed Assembly members' reaction to news the state is highly ranked as a good place for teachers to ply their trade. Our reaction: Just what is wrong with being a good place to work? For anyone? We'd like Maryland to be a better state for farming, too, but between farmland being (expensively) gobbled up by development, climate-fueled erratic weather and the outside agitators like Donald Trump and his tariff shenanigans, farming is hard times here. So, for that matter, might be voting. People may actually have to raise a little hell to make sure that MAGA doesn't take desperate measures here and in other states to preserve at least its grip on the Senate -- which, as we see below, is within the grasp of the House majority. As Baltimore hero Frank Zappa set to music, "The torture never stops" when MAGA is dipping into its war chest for a fresh batch of fabrications dumped before the public. For better or mostly worse, it's all News You Can Use.
