John,

Today marks one year since we launched Protect Kids: Fight Flavored E-Cigarettes, our partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies to reverse the youth e-cigarette epidemic. We've made incredible progress.

In particular:

  • 5 states ended the sale of flavored e-cigarettes – as did dozens of cities across the country.
  • 25% of the U.S. population is protected by these laws – 81.4 million people altogether, including 17.7 million kids!
  • New CDC data released just yesterday shows a significant decline in overall youth e-cigarette use, after two years of alarming increases.

This wouldn't have happened without the support of advocates like you. Thank you for answering our calls to contact legislators, sign petitions, show up at events (back when that was possible!), and donate to support our campaigns.

But it's not all good news. Far from it.

Youth e-cigarette use remains at epidemic levels in the U.S.

  • Nearly 1 in 5 high schoolers – and 3.6 million kids overall – still vape.
  • More of these kids are using e-cigarettes on at least 20 days a month – a sure sign of addiction.
  • Kids have shifted dramatically to menthol and disposable e-cigarettes, products exempted from federal restrictions.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 has drastically increased the urgency of our mission, as evidence mounts that kids who vape are at greater risk.

We have a lot of work to do.

The evidence just keeps getting clearer and clearer:

  • If any flavored e-cigarettes are left on the market, kids will migrate to them.
  • Our progress can be quickly reversed without bold action to eliminate all flavored e-cigarettes and protect every child.

We’re going to keep fighting until all flavored e-cigarettes are off the market and we've stopped tobacco companies from targeting kids once and for all. City by city, state by state – nationwide.

If you'll stick with us in this fight, I know we can get it done together.

Sincerely,

Matt Myers
President
