Angelines don’t have a great choice in the upcoming Mayoral runoff. I can (and do) go back and forth highlighting serious problems with both candidates. Here’s another for the Raman checklist.

Hypocrite Socialist Nithya Raman Wants 88% More House

My latest California Post column looks at Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman, the socialist politics she has embraced and what she is doing with her own house.

Raman wants to demolish her 1,879-square-foot Silver Lake home and replace it with a three-story, 3,528-square-foot house with a spa and two-car garage.

That is an 88% increase in living space.

And there is nothing wrong with wanting a bigger house.

If you own your property, can afford the improvements, and follow the law, you should be able to build the home you want.

That is part of the point.

Housing has been central to Raman’s political identity. She is also a longtime member of the Democratic Socialists of America’s Los Angeles chapter and has accepted the organization’s endorsement in her campaign for mayor.

DSA-LA has some very specific ideas about private property and housing.

So Raman’s renovation is more than an interesting real-estate story. It raises a pretty obvious question about political principles.

My column looks at the enormous upgrade Raman wants for her own property and the housing philosophy of the organization now working to elect her mayor.

There is also an interesting wrinkle involving the official residence available to Los Angeles mayors if they win the job. I’ll leave that one for the column.

Nobody should begrudge Raman a beautiful home or a bigger one.

But when housing is one of the defining issues of your political career, voters are entitled to ask whether the principles you advocate for everybody else are the same ones you live by yourself.
