We have a chance to turn one of the most notorious counties in America for
racist policing and incarceration into a model of justice reform.

Maricopa County Arizona is where infamous Sheriff Joe Arpiao led a racist,
anti-immigrant crusade that the US Justice Department found to be the
worst pattern of racial profiling by any law enforcement agency in US
history. Arpiao terrorized residents, cost Maricopa taxpayers tens of
millions in civil suits, and helped drive Arizona to the fourth-highest
incarceration rate in the country.

That’s why Real Justice is so excited to announce our endorsement of
reformer Julie Gunnigle for County Attorney in Maricopa County, AZ.

Julie is facing a tough election against a Republican incumbent who
threatened to prosecute people if Roe v. Wade was reversed. She needs our
support.

Born and raised in Maricopa County, Julie understands her community’s need
for reform – especially in a time where our complex criminal justice
systems are in need of massive structural transformation.

From ending cash bail, to championing reproductive rights, sentencing
reforms to reduce mass incarceration, eliminating private prisons,
prosecuting political corruption, and holding law enforcement accountable,
Julie is determined to create the communities and systems that uplift and
support our community instead of separate and devalue them.

Julie can win, but it’s going to be tough. Maricopa voted to replace Joe
Arpiao in 2017, but Julie is running against an appointed Republican who
not only has the advantage of incumbency, but the support of the forces of
white supremacy that want to continue the legacy of Joe Arpiao.
