With vote-by-mail, we've tried to make voting as easy as possible in Washington state because we know that when all of us can vote more easily and more securely, our democracy is better for it.

And I know just the person to talk to about the subject: former Attorney General Eric Holder.

He's spent his career fighting to expand voting rights, especially in areas that are historically marginalized. We've seen what happens when we take our eye off the ball: Voters are being purged from the rolls in Georgia and Wisconsin, and Texas has instituted strict voter ID laws.

Since leaving the Department of Justice, Attorney General Holder has focused all his energy on ending gerrymandering and creating more representative maps, fixing those that have given Republicans a disproportionate amount of power (basically ensuring that states would have permanent Republican majorities).

So, like me, he knows the power states have to influence the rest of the country -- in good ways and, too often, bad. There's so much we can do at the state level that makes the rest of the country stronger -- including embracing universal vote-by-mail! -- and I'm excited to talk more with him about that.
