Folks, it’s been a tough year.

Ever since Donald Trump set off an unprecedented mid-decade gerrymandering crisis, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee has been in overdrive. We’ve used every tool at our disposal to fight back and level the playing field.

As we approach the next phase of this fight at the ballot box, one question I keep hearing from supporters is, “Do my $5 donations really help?” My answer couldn’t be clearer: Absolutely. [[link removed]]

I’ve held a lot of important titles over my life — Attorney General, Chief Judge, Deputy Attorney General, U.S. Attorney — but I now hold the most important title of all of them: American citizen.

The power we have as American citizens is too often underestimated and minimized. A $5 donation viewed in isolation may not seem significant. But if everyone reading this email came together with $5 contributions, it would fund our work through the rest of the midterm elections. That’s the power that each of us has.

I understand that people can be a little pessimistic about whether or not we’re going to be able to stop Republican gerrymanders and get back to a system that’s fair and truly representative. I say history should be our guide.

We just celebrated the 250th anniversary of the time a bunch of people got together and decided to take on the mightiest empire in the world to form this nation. I’m sure they had doubts along the way and asked themselves, “Can we pull this off?” We’re celebrating today because they didn’t let it stop them.

When women decided that they wanted the right to vote, surely they had doubts about making it happen. I’m sure there were times when Dr. King, John Lewis, and Diane Nash must have thought, “Can we rip down a system of American apartheid?” And yet, they mobilized millions and changed the course of history forever.

I always come back to this quote from Dr. King: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” But the reality is, it doesn't bend on its own. It only bends when people like us put our hands on that arc and pull it towards justice. And a donation to the cause of defending democracy is one way in which you can put your hand on that arc and pull it. [[link removed]]

So whether you’re donating $5, making phone calls, writing postcards, or trying to get your friends to the polls — all these small individual actions might seem insignificant on their own. Together, they create a nation. They change the world.

And that’s why I remain optimistic.

I know that if we are focused, committed, and stay the course, we will ultimately win this fight. So, as we face escalating threats to our democracy, I’m asking you to step up with a donation of $5 or whatever you can give to the National Democratic Redistricting Committee.
