ACTION SPOTLIGHT

Trump Administration Wants to Make Arctic Drilling Even Less Safe

Oil and gas operations in the Arctic are
about to become riskier: The Trump administration proposed
rolling back safety, containment, and spill-response standards
for oil and gas exploration across vast swaths of the Arctic
Ocean, including off the coast of the iconic Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge, home to endangered polar bears, whales, seals,
and migratory birds.

Dismantling these critical safety measures increases the
likelihood of oil spills and industrial contamination in the
Arctic, which can annihilate vulnerable coastal environments and
leave pollution that lasts for decades. The administration’s
efforts to subsidize the oil and gas industry by gutting safety
standards puts corporate profit ahead of Alaska and the Arctic.

The Trump administration is accepting public comments on this
dangerous drilling proposal until October 5. Don’t wait: Send a
message of opposition right now. ( [link removed] )

TAKE ACTION ( [link removed] )

Public comments are a critical tool to ensure
government decisions follow the law — and when NRDC members and
activists speak up, it helps us build a strong legal case to hold
federal agencies accountable.

CAMPAIGN UPDATE

40,000+ Strong in the Fight to Save Our
National Forests — What’s Next

Last month, Trump’s U.S. Department of
Agriculture moved forward with a plan to dismantle the Roadless
Area Conservation Rule, throwing some of the best parts of our
national forests open to logging and roadbuilding.

The roadless rule safeguards nearly 60 million acres of pristine
forestlands, protects habitats of endangered salmon, wolves, and
grizzlies, and provides clean drinking water for over 25 million
Americans.

This dangerous rollback is part of a broader, coordinated attack
by the Trump administration to hand over our public lands and
waters to corporate interests. The administration has already:

* Abolished the Public Lands Rule,
leaving over 200 million acres vulnerable to exploitation by the
coal, oil, and gas industries
* Pushed for oil and gas drilling in Alaska’s Western Arctic and
the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge’s Coastal Plain — a region
sacred to the Gwich’in people and a critical habitat for caribou
and polar bears
* Slashed protections for Bears Ears and Grand
Staircase-Escalante National Monuments by 90 percent, putting
nearly 3 million acres at risk

Now, the administration is targeting
tens of millions of acres within our National Forest System —
from Alaska’s Tongass National Forest to California’s Tahoe
National Forest and segments of the Appalachian Trail — for
logging and industrial destruction by dismantling the roadless
rule.

Over 40,000 NRDC supporters have
already made their voices heard against the administration’s
destructive plan to axe our forests. Add your voice before the
October 6 comment deadline.

LITIGATION UPDATE

NRDC Sues the Trump Admin to Stop the
Erasure of Iconic Public Lands

NRDC has filed 59 lawsuits against
the current Trump administration. Last week, NRDC sued the Trump
administration after it issued two illegal proclamations gutting
Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments,
opening nearly 3 million acres of public lands and wildlife
habitat to drilling and mining. The repeated attacks set a
dangerous precedent that puts our most cherished places and
wildlife at risk — and must be stopped. Read more > ( [link removed] )

Impact

* NRDC Delivers Over 32,000 Messages in
Opposition to Two More Attacks on our Public Lands: ( [link removed] ) NRDC supporters mobilized an undeniable public outcry against
the Trump administration’s mad rush to sacrifice treasured public
lands. 32,962 activists submitted public comments against
reckless plans to open areas near Arizona’s Grand
Canyon-Parashant National Monument and Grand Canyon National
Park, as well as Colorado’s Roan Plateau, for oil and gas leasing
and potential drilling. Read more about threats to public lands >

* Pennsylvania Governor Signs Executive Order to Make Data
Centers Pay: ( [link removed]- ) Last month, Governor Shapiro signed an executive order to make
sure data centers pay for the costs of their own power and grid
upgrades, including using an increasing amount of clean energy to
power their facilities. This victory comes after hundreds of NRDC
and NRDC Action Fund activists across the state sent messages
urging PA lawmakers to protect Pennsylvanians from surging
electricity costs due to data center energy demand. Read more >>

* Minnesota Moves to Protect Boundary Waters after Congress
Strips Federal Protections: ( [link removed] ) Governor Tim Walz signed an executive order helping to add
additional protections for the Boundary Waters, one of America's
most treasured wildernesses. The order bans new sulfide-ore
copper mining on Minnesota state lands. It also increases
protections for these vital waters and public lands, in contrast
to a Congressional motion passed in April that allows for more
mining to potentially take place in the Boundary Waters watershed
across federal lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Read

DEEP DIVE

Does your state protect workers from
extreme heat? Check NRDC’s map to find out.

This past July was the hottest month
ever recorded in the Lower 48 of the United States since federal
records began in 1895. Thanks to human-caused climate change,
this kind of heat is becoming more common and more intense — and
it’s particularly dangerous for millions of workers who have to
work outside with little or no legal protection. Some states are
recognizing that our changing climate means it's time to change
the law and put heat protections in place — but most states are
lagging. Check out NRDC’s newly updated map to see where your
state stands when it comes to protecting their workers from
dangerous heat. ( [link removed] )

ACTION ROUNDUP

* Defend our forests from the
administration’s chopping block: ( [link removed] ) The Trump administration wants to open tens of millions of
acres of national forests to destructive logging, including
California’s Tahoe National Forest, Alaska’s Tongass National
Forest, and the Appalachian Trail. Submit a public comment by
10/6 to save our forests > ( [link removed] )

* Protect North Atlantic right whales: ( [link removed] ) The Trump administration is moving to gut the rule that makes
ships slow down in vital whale habitat – a real lifesaver against
deadly strikes. Submit a public comment by 10/13 to help whales
stay safe > ( [link removed] )

* Help Stop Data Centers from Polluting Your Air: ( [link removed] ) Trump’s EPA wants to end the legal requirement for industrial
polluters like power plants and data centers to prove their
facilities won't pollute and harm the air you breathe. Send your
letter to the EPA now > ( [link removed] )
