The Wyoming Playbook

The Daily Caller News Foundation’s September 3 report, “How the Left Is Taking Over America’s Reddest State,” describes exactly what happened in Wyoming’s August 18 primary. There was no Democratic wave — none was needed. What occurred instead was a well-funded machine of donors, business interests, and establishment PACs running left-leaning Republicans behind conservative branding, and winning decisively.

The Machine Worked

In July, the PAC Common Sense Republicans for Wyoming released a 2026 Republican Primary Voter Guide endorsing Eric Barlow for governor, Robert Short for secretary of state, and three House candidates running against sitting Freedom Caucus members. Co-founder Emily Madden touted that 29 of the PAC’s 34 endorsed candidates won their races. Barlow crushed Trump-backed Megan Degenfelder, 45.1% to 29.7%, and Short won as well. In America’s reddest state, the primary is the election — and the left-of-center faction just captured it.

Branding vs. Record

The article’s most important point concerns how this victory was sold. Barlow’s campaign presented him as a “mainstream conservative Republican.” His legislative record tells a different story. As the Freedom Caucus has documented, Barlow consistently supported ever-growing state spending, voted against state sovereignty measures, sponsored progressive legislation, and as Speaker presided over the 2020 special session during Gov. Gordon’s COVID lockdowns — a session that failed to protect the rights of the people of Wyoming. That is not a conservative record; it is a big-government record wearing a cowboy hat.

The Money Trail

Barlow’s campaign shattered Wyoming fundraising records, raising more than $1.65 million — fueled by a coalition of donors, business groups, and PACs united less by conservative principle than by opposition to the Freedom Caucus. The PAC’s own literature attacked Freedom Caucus funding as “out of state,” yet the coalition financing Barlow and his allies was itself a national-scale operation. Money beat message, and the “common sense” label did the rest.

What Wyoming Lost

The stakes were real. Wyoming’s Freedom Caucus was the first in the nation to hold a majority in a statehouse, and it delivered: a steep property tax cut, a ban on diversity programs in government, and most of its legislative priorities enacted. Those achievements came from legislators who answered to voters, not to chambers of commerce. Now many of those members have lost their seats to better-funded opponents, and Wyoming’s policy direction will shift accordingly — toward higher spending, softer conservatism, and an establishment comfortable with the status quo.

The Lesson

Nicole Silverio’s closing warning is the one conservatives everywhere should heed. The Wyoming playbook — rebrand moderates as “mainstream conservatives,” outspend the grassroots in primaries, and let the deep-red general election do the rest — is fully portable to any Republican state. If conservatives sit out primaries, cede the airwaves, and let coalition money define the terms, they will lose their states without ever seeing a Democrat’s name on the winning ballot. Wyoming proves the strategy works. The question is whether other red states will wake up in time.
