I have spent most of my adult life as a historian, and historians are trained
to be careful with words likeunprecedented. So understand that I am not
reaching for drama when I tell you something has changed in this country that
has not changed before in my lifetime.


For forty years I argued with the American left. I debated them on television,
negotiated with them in the Capitol, and beat them at the ballot box. Through
all of it there was one thing I could say with confidence to any audience
anywhere in America: the socialists do not win here. They write books here.
They teach here. They march here. But they do not govern here.


I can no longer say that.

Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan's Democrat Senate primary, defeating a sitting
congresswoman who ran to his right.

ON THE BALLOT —

governor of Wisconsin.



One of them holds office. One won a nomination. One was a candidate. None of
them are shouting from outside the building. They are inside it, or knocking on
the door with a real chance of getting in.



WHY I THINK WE MISREAD THIS

For years our side has answered socialism by pointing at Venezuela. I
understand the impulse. I have come to believe it is the wrong argument, and
that it is part of why we keep losing this exchange with people under forty.


Nobody is voting for Venezuela. They are voting for rent they can pay,
groceries they can afford, and the sense that somebody in authority is on their
side.


Socialism does not arrive announcing itself as ruin. It arrives as relief.

It is voted in by decent, frustrated people who have been told a simple story
and have not been told a better one. That is the part that keeps me up. Not
that the argument is being made — the argument has always been made. It is that
the argument is winning, and we have not found the words to answer it.



WHAT I AM ASKING YOU FOR

Something harder to give than a contribution. I want to know how well the
people who stand behind House Republicans actually understand what is happening
— not whether you oppose it, I know you oppose it, but whether you have thought
through how it arrives, what it costs, and why it is persuading people.
