Mohammed bin Salman Pressed Trump Twice Over the Houthis. Washington Declined
Direct Strikes — For Now.

Saudi Arabia's crown prince personally sought U.S. military action as Houthi
forces advanced along Yemen's Red Sea coast and seized Perim Island. Trump has
so far declined direct American strikes, while offering intelligence and
targeting support instead.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman personally pressed President Trump for
American military assistance against Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis as the
group's forces advanced rapidly along the Red Sea coast. Reuters reported that
Trump held at least two telephone conversations with the crown prince on
Thursday, while CBS News said the two leaders had spoken multiple times in
recent days about the escalation.
Bin Salman's request was for direct U.S. military action against Houthi
forces. The Trump administration has so far declined that request. Instead,
U.S. officials told reporters that Washington would provide Saudi Arabia with
intelligence sharing and targeting assistance while avoiding direct American
strikes for now.

The Saudi request followed the Houthis' seizure of Mokha and Mayun — also
known as Perim — inside the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Those gains give the group a
stronger position around a waterway Saudi Arabia has increasingly relied upon
as an alternative to shipping through the disrupted Strait of Hormuz.

Saudi Arabia's concern is compounded by the temporary shutdown of the
East-West Pipeline, the major land route used to move crude from the kingdom's
eastern producing region to Yanbu on the Red Sea. Together, the Houthi advance
and the pipeline disruption have increased pressure on multiple parts of Saudi
Arabia's export system at the same time.

U.S. COORDINATION CENTCOM CBS News reported that Adm. Brad Cooper,
commander of U.S. Central Command, was in Saudi Arabia for coordination talks
as the crisis developed.
Direct American strikes would represent a different level of involvement from
intelligence and targeting assistance. The United States has conducted military
operations against Houthi targets in previous phases of the Red Sea conflict,
but officials are currently signaling that Washington does not intend to open a
new direct campaign against the group in response to the latest Saudi request.

► THE REGIONAL DEFENSE PACT
Saudi Arabia also has a newer regional security framework available. In
August, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan signed the Makkah Joint Defense
Agreement, establishing a collective-defense principle under which an armed
attack on one member is treated as an attack on all three.

MAKKAH JOINT DEFENSE AGREEMENT
SAUDI
ARABIA + TÜRKİYE + PAKISTAN The pact contains a collective-defense
clause, but there has been no public announcement that Pakistan or Türkiye has
entered the current fighting under that agreement.
The agreement adds another layer to Saudi Arabia's security options, but its
practical application to the latest Houthi advance remains unclear. Pakistani
and Turkish officials have described the pact as defensive, and neither
government has publicly announced direct military involvement in the current
Saudi-Houthi escalation.
