Email from Nida for Durham A nine-month loophole could leave Durham with decades of damage. When a pipe bursts in your house, the first thing you do is shut off the main water valve. You don’t leave it dripping while you assess the damage. You shut it down, figure out what went wrong, and make a plan to fix it. Durham County was supposed to do the same thing with data centers. Our Board of Commissioners passed a nine-month moratorium so we could study the long-term effects of these facilities, but the final policy included carve-outs allowing facilities of up to 100,000 square feet to move forward. That’s roughly the size of two football fields! More than 60 Durham residents showed up to oppose these carve-outs. High school students, college students, farmers, and lifelong residents all asked us to take their health and their future seriously. I fought to remove the carve-outs completely. When that motion failed to receive a second, I successfully added amendments requiring companies to disclose their expected electricity use, water consumption, and cooling fluids. But I still voted no on the final moratorium because we should be doing more. This nine-month long moratorium is temporary, but any data center approved through these loopholes could remain in Durham for decades.
