Houthis Seize Perim Island, Tightening Their Grip on Bab el-Mandeb as Saudi
Arabia's Oil Bypass Comes Under Pressure.

Houthi forces have reached the volcanic island sitting inside one of the
world's most important shipping chokepoints. At the same time, Saudi Arabia has
temporarily shut the pipeline designed to move crude west without passing
through the Strait of Hormuz.

STRAIT CONTROL SHIFT

STRATEGIC ISLAND PERIM Inside Bab el-Mandeb GEOGRAPHIC EFFECT The island
divides the strait into two navigation channels.
Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement reached Perim Island after a rapid
advance along the country's western coastline that included Mokha, Dhubab and
nearby Red Sea positions. Perim — also known as Mayun — sits directly inside
the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the maritime gateway connecting the Gulf of Aden with
the Red Sea and the Suez Canal route.

Perim's significance comes from its location rather than its size. The island
divides the narrowest portion of Bab el-Mandeb into eastern and western
channels. Holding it gives the Houthis a new position from which movements
through both sides of the strait can be monitored and potentially threatened.

The territorial shift substantially increases Houthi leverage over shipping,
but it does not mean that Bab el-Mandeb is physically closed. Commercial ships
can still transit the waterway. The change is that the Houthis now hold
positions both on the adjacent Yemeni coastline and on strategically located
islands inside or around the strait.

TWO CHOKEPOINTS
The development is particularly important because traffic through the Strait
of Hormuz has already been heavily disrupted. As Gulf exporters sought
alternatives, more oil was redirected toward western Saudi infrastructure and
the Red Sea, increasing the strategic importance of Bab el-Mandeb.

Context: Before the current disruptions, Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb together
handled roughly one-third of global seaborne oil trade. Current Hormuz traffic
is substantially below normal levels.

SAUDI BYPASS UNDER PRESSURE
Saudi Arabia simultaneously shut its East-West Pipeline as a precaution
following drone attacks. The approximately 1,200-kilometer line moves crude
from the kingdom's eastern producing regions to Yanbu on the Red Sea and is one
of Saudi Arabia's principal ways of exporting oil without passing through
Hormuz.

Eastern oil fields → 1,200 KM PIPELINE → Yanbu Red Sea The route was
built specifically to reduce Saudi dependence on crude exports through Hormuz.
The combination creates a more complicated export problem for Gulf producers.
Pressure on Hormuz had increased the value of the Red Sea route; the temporary
pipeline shutdown now affects the infrastructure feeding that route at the same
time Houthi territorial gains are increasing maritime security concerns at its
southern entrance.

Oil markets have responded to the broader transport risk. Brent crude has
traded around and above $100 a barrel during the regional escalation as traders
assess reduced Hormuz traffic, uncertainty around Saudi export infrastructure
and the stronger Houthi position surrounding Bab el-Mandeb.

THE STRATEGIC SHIFT The alternative to a disrupted Hormuz increasingly
depends on a Red Sea route whose southern entrance is itself becoming less
secure.

03 CORE NOTES Three consequences of the advance

01 Perim places Houthi forces directly inside the geography of Bab
el-Mandeb, adding a strategic island position to their expanding control of
Yemen's nearby coastline.

02 Bab el-Mandeb had become increasingly important as exporters redirected
cargo away from disrupted Hormuz traffic, raising the economic significance of
any new threat to Red Sea shipping.

03 Saudi Arabia's temporary East-West Pipeline shutdown affects one of the
principal infrastructure systems specifically designed to bypass Hormuz and
move Gulf crude toward the Red Sea.
