Paramount Skydance has completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery after outbidding Netflix in a monthslong battle for the studio, HBO, and the DC and Harry Potter franchises, with Warner shareholders having approved the all-cash deal earlier this year. Netflix had originally agreed to acquire Warner's studio and streaming operations in a cash-and-stock deal worth roughly $82.7 billion, but walked away rather than match Paramount's higher all-cash offer, with its co-CEOs saying the deal was "always a 'nice to have' at the right price, not a 'must have' at any price." Netflix's decision looked shrewd in the moment, sending its shares up nearly 10% when it declined to raise its bid, but the stock has since struggled on its own, now down roughly 38% over the past 12 months after a July earnings report that met expectations but gave investors no meaningful boost to full-year revenue guidance. |
