On Friday, September 18, LCA will join Toronto animal advocates for a Save the York 9 back-to-school outreach event and protest as thousands of students return to York University for the fall semester.

This is a critical opportunity to alert students, professors, and other members of the York community about the nine rhesus macaques who are subjected to invasive brain research at the university.

Footage from LCA’s investigation will be shown on a media truck and at two York University subway entrances. Join us to expose the abuse of the York 9 and demand their freedom.

Since LCA released a major undercover on April 30 exposing the macaques’ suffering, monthly protests have continued at York.

As York has yet to take meaningful action, the Jane Goodall Institute issued a statement last week calling on York to retire the macaques to a sanctuary.

MEETING PLACE: TTC York University Subway Station Entrances, 120 Ian MacDonald Blvd, Toronto, ON

MATERIALS: Signs, banners, and leaflets will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. This protest will focus on outreach to raise awareness and share the call to action. If possible, please avoid large, unrelated logos on clothing (such as brand names). Let’s be respectful to all and work together to help the animals.

WHY WE PROTEST: We are coming together to raise awareness about the suffering of nine rhesus macaques used in animal research at York University, urge the surrender of the macaques to a sanctuary, and demand a future beyond animal testing.

PROTEST CO-HOSTS: LCA, The Anti-Vivisection Alliance (TAVA), Direct Action Everywhere Toronto, Animal Rights Toronto, and advocates Vikki Lenola, Jenny McQueen, and Peter McQueen.

BACKGROUND: LCA’S YORK UNIVERSITY INVESTIGATION

An undercover investigation conducted by LCA exposed disturbing conditions inside York University's primate research laboratory.

Footage documented nine rhesus macaques:

Confined to small, barren cages

Subjected to invasive cranial implants

Wearing restraint collars 24/7

Socially isolated

Exhibiting signs of stereotypic behavior, including pacing, overgrooming, and pulling out their hair

Subjected to water restriction, resulting in some macaques drinking their own urine

Since LCA released the investigation, we have continued to pressure York University to end primate research and free the York 9.

Growing public dissatisfaction with animal research in Europe and the U.S. is fueling momentum for cheaper, more accurate non-animal methods.

The time is now for York to end its primate research, show compassion toward animals, and end its legacy of cruelty.
