Lonnie Bunch, who has spent nearly 38 years at the Smithsonian and has served as Secretary since 2019, announced he is stepping down from his role. He has dedicated more than half of his life working at and being part of the Smithsonian. And as the first Black man to serve as Secretary of the Smithsonian, Bunch was instrumental in the establishment of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture.

But the Trump administration has repeatedly attacked his leadership, alleging that Smithsonian museums present “radical ideologies” that weaken the shared American identity.

At the beginning of his second term, Trump issued an executive order that directed Vice President JD Vance to eliminate “improper, divisive, or anti-American” ideology from the museum’s programs. He’s repeatedly attacked the museum for focusing “too much on how bad slavery was” and said the museum is run by radical activists that cannot be trusted to tell America’s story.

And just last week, the Interior Department threatened to cut its financial support for the museums.
