A Reflection on September 11

Christian shared a personal memory this week worth carrying into the newsletter. On the morning of September 11, 2001, he was on reserve duty in Madison, painting an office in coveralls that didn't fit, when a fellow Marine came running through with the news.What stayed with him wasn't just the shock of that morning. It was what came after: a period where people who didn't agree on everything still understood that some things mattered more than politics.

His point isn't a call to relive that moment so much as a question about what we've lost sight of since: that freedom comes with responsibility, not just to ourselves but to each other. As he put it, the country's strength has never come from everyone thinking alike. It comes from standing together when it counts.

It's a fitting note for a campaign built on the idea that community comes before party, and we wanted to share it as Christian wrote it.

Christian spent part of this week at HearthStone of WI's picnic in Sheboygan Falls, invited to share a little about why he's running. The talking mostly gave way to kickball, a supersized game of Yahtzee, and a few rounds of Jenga. HearthStone helps adults with disabilities stay connected and active in the community, through everything from mini golf outings to scholarships to holiday parties, and Wednesday's picnic showed exactly that.

He was also part of Rocky Knoll's 100th anniversary celebration, where the history was interesting, but the stories about the staff were what stuck. One resident, 101 years old, put it simply: she calls the people who cared for her "my angels."

Wednesday evening brought a full house at the City of Sheboygan's data center education event, with real questions about energy use, infrastructure, and what a project of that scale means for the community. Christian's takeaway wasn't about the specifics, it was that these conversations work best when people come ready to listen as well as speak. Tuesday, September 29, at Jake's Cafe. This is a direct conversation with teachers and school staff about what they're seeing in the classroom, and it's one we'd like to see well attended. If you work in education, or know someone who does, this is worth the evening.

Postcard writing. A low-key way to help from your kitchen table. We're timing this so postcards land in mailboxes around September 17, the same week absentee ballots start going out.Phone banking. An ongoing phone bank, both scheduled sessions and event-based shifts, to reach voters a doorstep conversation might not.Host a sign.
