Of course, you and I know that this White House is a threat to democracy — we’ve watched them orchestrate a national redistricting crisis that has already ripped power away from voters in several states...
But President Trump and his MAGA allies don’t want to stop there.
One of the quieter parts of this power grab involves creating an uneven playing field in 2030 and beyond — that’s why they’re going after the U.S. Census.
Fair elections and fair representation depend on an accurate census. The census provides a highly detailed picture of who is represented in a locality and how policies impact those communities. It’s a powerful tool to ensure representative democracy works.
But in its attempt to manipulate the 2030 Census, the White House is aiming to ignore race, gender, and sexual orientation — and stop counting undocumented immigrants.
Here’s the thing: The 14th Amendment is crystal clear about who the census must count — every person in a state, regardless of citizenship. This scheme is as unconstitutional as it is an affront to our democracy. Ready to do something about it? The census is the people’s data. It was created for the people to ensure government represents the people — not the interests of politicians. (You can see why Donald Trump isn’t a fan of an accurate census count.) In addition to ensuring fair maps, the data collected guides allocations for state funding.
Here’s the thing: The first Trump White House tried its best to distort the census last time around. And the fair maps movement took them to court — and ultimately we stopped this unconstitutional plan.
But the court didn’t discard the Trump Administration’s scheme for legal reasons; it did so for procedural ones. A lot has changed in the last six years, and the courts have been a whole lot friendlier to Trump’s whims. We can’t just sit back and hope for the best. The NDRC’s Litigation and Policy team has been closely monitoring updates from the Census Bureau to ensure the fair maps movement can respond. We are dedicated to fighting back against any attempt by the White House or any of its allies to mess with the census, and you can help.
Give today to strengthen our opposition to MAGA’s efforts to handpick the people who get to have a voice in this country. Democracy’s future depends on stopping this threat now: [[link removed]]
