Saudi Arabia’s Backup Oil Route Just Went Down Too

With Strait of Hormuz traffic already a fraction of its pre-war level, Saudi Arabia’s main alternate pipeline just went offline too — and markets haven’t had a full session to react.

Today is a non-trading day, so this edition looks ahead to Monday rather than back at this morning’s open. The story that matters most heading into next week: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy shut down the East-West pipeline — the kingdom’s main route for moving oil without passing through the Strait of Hormuz — after a drone strike damaged sections of the line. This is confirmed by Saudi officials and reported directly by CNBC, Al Jazeera, and The National.

Signal 01 · Verified Movement

The East-West pipeline normally carries 4 to 5 million barrels of oil per day — roughly 4-5% of global supply — over 1,200 kilometers, giving Saudi Arabia a way to export crude without transiting Hormuz. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy shut it down “as a precaution” while assessing damage from the strike, which originated from Iraq’s southeastern Maysan province. No group has claimed responsibility, though analysts believe Iran-backed militias were most likely responsible; on Friday into Saturday, President Trump said Iran was “probably responsible” for the attack.

Signal 02 · Overlooked Connection

This lands on top of an already-degraded Strait of Hormuz. Vessel transit through the strait fell to just 7 ships on September 10, down from 11 the day before and versus a pre-war average of roughly 125 daily cargo vessels, according to shipping data reported by FXStreet. The strait is not literally closed, but commercial traffic has collapsed to a small fraction of normal. Energy analyst Ben Cahill put it directly: “The key buffers that got us through the last six months have basically been worn away.”

Signal 03 · Portfolio Relevance

Friday’s oil price action was counterintuitive given this backdrop: WTI crude actually fell 3.35% to $99.05 and Brent fell 3.61% to $103.70, as traders focused on diplomatic hopes for a temporary Hormuz shipping arrangement rather than the fresh pipeline damage. Gulf and Iranian foreign ministers are scheduled to meet in Salalah, Oman on Monday, September 15 — the same day the Fed’s meeting begins — to negotiate that arrangement. A previous version of a safe shipping corridor, agreed in June, collapsed when Iran attacked vessels using it.

The Part That Deserves Scrutiny

The public narrative treats Friday’s rally as inflation data reassuring markets. That’s accurate as far as it goes, but it also means markets absorbed a major new supply-side risk (the pipeline shutdown) in the same session and shrugged it off in favor of diplomatic optimism about a different chokepoint. Whether that optimism is justified depends entirely on whether Monday’s Salalah talks produce something durable — the last attempt didn’t survive the month. We do not know how those talks will go, and we are not predicting an outcome.

Capital Tells

When a market absorbs both a supply shock and a diplomatic hope in the same session and rallies anyway, it usually means the diplomatic story is doing more work in the price than the physical disruption — which makes Monday’s actual talks outcome more important than usual.
