Friend, I’m going to be straightforward here. I hope you’ll read on.
The US relationship with Israel has been front and center in elections across the country this year.
And what we’ve seen is candidates who call out the Gaza genocide and reject AIPAC winning from Pennsylvania, to Colorado, to Michigan, to right here in Minnesota. This should surprise no one.
For almost three years now, we have watched as the Israeli military has waged a brutal military campaign, killing tens of thousands of civilians, murdering innocent kids and babies, and displacing millions of people. War crimes have been committed on an almost daily basis, from the restriction of humanitarian aid to the intentional targeting of entire families. This, backdropped by almost 80 years of illegal occupation, ethnic cleansing, and apartheid.
And what has been the establishment's response to this historic injustice? To continue to stand by Israel’s actions. To continue to send Israel billions of dollars in military aid and weapons. And to tell people they had it all wrong — and even punish them — when they spoke up, protested, and pushed for change from a place of moral clarity.
It’s no wonder that that same establishment is now stunned that Americans are outraged, and losing ground fast.
It’s been an uphill battle, but the movement for dignity, peace, and self-determination for Palestine is growing larger every day, and thanks to your tireless efforts, we are electing more pro-Palestine champions than at any time in American history.
Americans are tired of seeing our tax dollars being used to commit war crimes. We are done with being told that we must support occupation and apartheid. And we are fed up with AIPAC and Israel’s allies in the US spending millions of dollars to defeat progressives and maintain the status quo.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice," and we are watching that happen in real time.
Palestinians have endured decades of injustice, but we are making progress towards an eventual peace for everyone in the region. It starts with ending the US government’s unconditional support for Israel and redefining our approach around international law and universal human rights.
In solidarity,
Ilhan Omar
