Dear John,
After months of dithering, Senate Republicans have finally revealed their new COVID relief bill, and frankly, it's appalling.
Here are the low lights:
- They cut extra unemployment benefits by $300 a week.
- State and local governments receive exactly $0 dollars to fund schools and fire departments.
- Nothing to keep the Postal Service operating.
- Nothing to ensure our elections can be held in a safe and secure way.
- No second stimulus check.
But the most outrageous part is that Senate Republicans may get just enough credit from the corporate media for “doing something” to save Mitch McConnell's Senate majority.
Meanwhile, permanent job losses increased by 500,000 in August, and new data show that half of out-of-work Americans now cannot cover their basic expenses with the money they receive through unemployment insurance.
Mitch McConnell's proposal is a pathetically inadequate response to this deepening crisis, and shows how out of touch he is with the suffering of the American people.
We have spent the last four years building one of the largest social media followings of any progressive organization in the country. Now, we are advancing an emergency public education push to make sure voters know the truth about Senate Republicans' pathetic coronavirus relief bill.
Please donate now to help make sure Americans know the truth: that Senate Republicans have utterly failed to help the American people survive this crisis.
Thank you for helping us hold the GOP accountable,
Robert Reich
