As housing costs rapidly outpace wages, homelessness is on the rise.

Trump is also gutting enforcement of our housing rights and threatening to lock up our unhoused neighbors. We must speak up!

Having access to a safe place to live is a human right, and we have the resources to permanently house all Americans in need — including about 1 million K-12 students who experience homelessness each year.

When the Senate comes back next week, they’ll consider the annual military budget bill. The House-passed version would spend nearly $1 trillion of our taxpayer dollars on war and weapons corporations.

The nonprofit group Public Citizen says that just one year of this budget would “house every homeless person in the U.S. for 121 years.”

Could you sign on to demand Congress eradicate homelessness in the richest country in the history of the world?

I’ve passed bills into law that increase the supply of affordable housing, expand home ownership opportunities to lower-wealth people, and help families avoid eviction by paying their utility bills.

But there’s so much more to do. I’m pushing to expand banking opportunities and access to credit, stop appraisal bias that devalues Black-owned homes, and end discriminatory lending and property tax practices that keep widening the wealth gap between Black and white families.

And right now, people in my district need support with home repairs after last week’s storms. So far, I’ve brought more than $7 million to my district to help seniors and flood victims repair and stay in their homes. I also passed a bill securing $3 billion for home repairs and neighborhood revitalization across the country, but we need to get this funding signed into law.

Here are some urgently-needed policies I’ve introduced, which Congress should pass as soon as possible:

• The Youth Homelessness Guaranteed Income Pilot Program Act. Young people experiencing homelessness crafted this bill to provide monthly direct cash assistance to young people in need.
• The Unhoused Persons Bill of Rights, which declares our neighbors’ human rights and provides solutions for the federal government to permanently end the unhoused crisis.
• The Tenant Empowerment Act, which would strengthen HUD tenant protections and provide renters in public housing with the tools necessary to improve the quality of their homes.
• Last week I also co-sponsored the No Homeless Detention Centers Act, which would prevent Trump’s threats by banning federal dollars from forcing unhoused people into detention-like facilities, and banning forced labor at such facilities.

Please sign to demand Congress prioritize ending the unhoused crisis, including passing legislation like the Unhoused Persons Bill of Rights, the Youth Homelessness Guaranteed Income Pilot Program Act, the No Homeless Detention Centers Act, and the Tenant Empowerment Act.

Every day, I’m fighting back against Trump’s attacks on our housing rights, including his attempts to dismantle our fair housing laws and gut the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Last year I requested $600 million to fund the State Veterans Homes program, which provides housing and supportive care through the Department of Veterans Affairs. I promise to keep fighting for veterans’ and everyone’s right to housing.

• Created a local housing justice legislative working group
• Brought more than $5.5 million federal dollars for affordable and supportive housing, which is helping our seasoned residents, new moms, and young people experiencing homelessness
