Ahead of Alberta’s referendum, an AI-powered misinformation campaign is giving a helping hand to separatists. This is just the beginning of how big tech will be used against Canadian sovereignty. That is, unless we act now.

Do you feel elections in Canada are safe?

This question could determine the future of Canada. Technology is advancing at an irresponsible, breakneck speed. This is empowering hostile, often foreign, entities to wage a war against our economy and our sovereignty.

More and more Canada’s elections are in the crosshairs. Recently, a network of bad actors took aim at Alberta’s upcoming referendum. There’s evidence that this AI-empowered mis- and disinformation campaign has ties to the US.

The Green Party wants to be clear: this interference in our sovereignty, our democratic process cannot stand. We’re calling on our supporters to help us demand that the government take action to keep foreign influence and malicious AI slop out of our elections.

What’s happening in Alberta is just the beginning, but it should set off alarm bells.

An investigation by Canada’s National Observer found a network of AI generated pro-Alberta separation websites. They target strategic voting demographics like young voters, oil and gas workers, veterans and farmers.

These sites give the wrong date for the referendum vote, placing it a week later. They also give misleading information on the referendum’s questions, and contain testimonials from fake people next to AI-generated images.

And the websites are specifically designed to entice AI platforms like ChatGPT and Claude to cite them in their results. This poses a legitimate and growing threat to our democracy as more and more Canadians get their questions answered by AI, whether it’s through a Google search or a chatbot.

As AI grows in power, its potential to be used for nefarious purposes will grow too, and quickly. Given the threat the US — a global leader in AI — poses to Canada, this should be a wake up call for the government.

The Green Party has a plan to stop the looming slop-pocalypse hanging over our democracy.

We need new and stronger agencies to tackle bad actors tampering with our democracy and to reckon with emerging technologies and their impacts on our elections and our lives. And we need to hold social media and AI companies accountable for the content they publish and the harms they create.

September 30th marks the end of the third quarter of 2026. Political parties report their fundraising totals every quarter and those numbers will be read and reported on by journalists. Those numbers tell a story.

Our goal this month is to raise $180,900. As of today, we’re at $27,478. That means we still need to raise $153,422 before September 30.
