Data shows that youth voters are worried about the direction of our country and are feeling the strain of bad policies. Yet, PA has the lowest rate of 18-year-olds registering to vote out of 30 states. The Civics Center found that only 22% of this voter block is registered to vote in Pennsylvania compared to 86% in Oregon, which leads the pack.

We know that low youth participation is disastrous for our democracy. But students are being forced to navigate political chaos and disinformation like never before, and face many barriers to registering to vote – and casting a ballot. For example, many other states let young voters pre-register before they turn 18, but Pennsylvania does not. That is why we make youth voter engagement and civic education a key part of our work.

Last week, Team NPP assisted 85 eligible students in registering to vote at Widener University in Delaware County in just a few hours, and this year, both NPP and the affiliated organization, NPPEF, have assisted 430 eligible students in registering to vote across PA. And we’re just getting started: In the coming weeks, team NPP will be back at Widener University, as well as Lincoln, Cheyney, Villanova, Millersville, Lebanon Valley College, and Penn State, celebrating National Voter Registration Day, Constitution Day, and our annual weekend voter registration blitz in State College.

We are 5 weeks away from the voter registration deadline in Pennsylvania, so we must move fast. Please help us activate and mobilize the youth vote by rushing $5 today.

A national survey recently found that 83% of Gen Z voters are dissatisfied with the direction of our country, 92% are concerned about the power of billionaires in politics, and 87% are concerned about affording their basic needs.

This research was done in partnership with Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity (URGE) and HIT Strategies, and it underscores why it’s so critical that we center youth voters in our work and ensure they understand the power of their vote as we near the November midterm elections and beyond.

As the late feminist icon Gloria Steinem stated, “hope is a form of planning.” Youth voters are feeling fatigued and apathetic about the political process, and that’s only going to get worse as Trump continues his fixation on chipping away at our democracy. But young voters have the power to decide the future of our nation and have a direct impact on the issues that matter most to them.

That’s why it’s essential that we continue to show up at colleges, universities, and high schools to engage students where they are: on campus, at festivities, school assemblies, football games, and concerts. Just last week, Team NPP assisted 85 eligible students in registering to vote at Widener University in Delaware County in just a few hours. Team NPP was also just on the campuses of The Lincoln University and West Chester University in Chester County, and will be continuing to engage students all across the Commonwealth for the remainder of the semester.
