Pull up any stock’s research page and you’ll find what we call the nouns. Fourteen analysts. Consensus: Strong Buy. Average target: $50. Tidy, official, permanent-looking. Here’s what the page doesn’t tell you: a rating keeps voting whether anyone’s touched it or not. An analyst sets a Buy, moves on to the other twenty companies he covers, and may not seriously revisit yours for months. His Buy still counts in the tally. His old target still pulls the average. A rating is like the “Best Diner in Town” sticker on the window — it stays up long after the critic stopped coming in. Over the past three Wednesdays we’ve counted the bench, watched which way the estimates move, and read the spread and the floor. Tonight, the tool that ties them together: ignore the nouns.
