On the 25th anniversary of September 11th, 2001, we remember those we lost and honor the heroes who saved lives. Today is a reminder that we are all part of something bigger than ourselves. We can’t take it for granted.

This week, Senator Kim was in New Jersey, highlighting 9/11 first responders and hosting a town hall in Flemington.

HIGHLIGHTING 9/11 FIRST RESPONDERS
Rich Gorman is a Jersey City native and Fire Chief. He was one of many New Jersey first responders who got the call for help on 9/11.

This is his story:

“I thought I was going to die that day. On 9/11, I responded to Lower Manhattan at around 7:00pm. We were at the edge of the rubble pile, things were burning, and there was no light. It was surrealistic. But in that very moment, I had to shake that fear of death off because people depended on me. I find my solace in helping people.
“25 years later, what I remember most is the panic. People were fleeing lower Manhattan in boats and water taxies and any way they could flee to come to safety. To come here to Jersey City. They were covered in dust and dirt and fearing for their lives. And our people were here to help them.
“When 9/11 comes around, I become emotionally distraught and very overwhelmed from time to time. I try to find peace here. Most times I do.
“Sometimes I’m asked to speak of my experiences and I find it difficult – big strong firemen, that puts us to our knees. I can never forget what I’ve seen. I can only help people through their darkness and find a path through light. And I’ll continue.”

MEETING YOU AT A TOWN HALL IN FLEMINGTON, NJ
Thank you to everyone who came to Senator Kim’s town hall in Hunterdon County this week.
The Senator believes hearing directly from New Jerseyans at a town hall is essential to our democracy. It is incredibly important that he has the opportunity to hear from every one of you about what is on your mind. Your passion, energy, and dedication are truly inspiring.

WORKING TO SUPPORT NJ’S DISABILITY COMMUNITY
The Progressive Center for Independent Living in Hunterdon County helps people with disabilities live independently in their communities.
While visiting the center this week, Senator Kim heard directly from people with disabilities and advocates about the disastrous impact Medicaid cuts have on access to healthcare.
We need MediKids because it would help support children with disabilities early on—by guaranteeing healthcare to ALL kids—and in the transition to young adulthood and independent living.

SUPPORTING NEW JERSEY’S WORKFORCE
This week, Senator Kim heard from the Hunterdon County Education Services Commission about their workforce and adult education initiatives.
For many Americans, continuing education and workforce training programs are vital in shaping successful financial futures. They rely on federal funding to do so.
Senator Kim will continue to do everything he can to ensure New Jerseyans are able to access these essential programs.

FIGHTING TO SHUT DOWN DELANEY HALL
Delaney Hall’s for-profit cycle of cruelty is by design. The corruption between the Trump administration and companies like GEO Group that run these detention centers is clear as day. Delaney Hall must be shut down for good.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month. This week, Senator Kim shared what this month means to him, as well as what it’s been like caring for his dad who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s last year.
The Senator also expressed his gratitude for all the caregivers out there who help look after our loved ones.
For those who are going through something similar, we see you. Together, we’ll get through this.
