Dear John, You may have seen the news that a disastrous fire has almost entirely destroyed Moria’s Registration and Identification Center on the Greek island of Lesvos. This center is the temporary home of some 12,000 people, despite its capacity being less than 3,000. Conditions in the center have long been very challenging due to the overcrowding. But in a setting where the most basic precautionary measures, such as physical distancing and handwashing in clean water, are difficult to implement, the recent threat of COVID-19 has made the situation even more desperate. Although no casualties have been reported so far as a result of the blaze, thousands of refugees and asylum seekers have once again been forced out of their homes and are very vulnerable. Right now, we are extremely concerned for those that have been evacuated from the site and are currently in urgent need of shelter, including children – many of whom are unaccompanied – as well as pregnant women and the elderly. We stand ready to support the fire survivors with transportation, emergency shelter, and core relief items, and to continue strengthening measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. But we cannot do this alone. |
