Folks,
25 years ago today, America changed.
Almost 3,000 people were killed in the September 11th attacks. Since that day, almost 10,000 first responders, firefighters, and employees have died from illnesses linked to exposure.
Today, I’m asking everyone to remember the Americans who were killed on September 11th, and to honor the brave first responders who ran straight into danger.
But I’d also like to ask everyone to remember what happened in our country afterwards.
In the weeks and months which followed the 9/11 attacks, we saw Americans come together like I’ve never seen before or since in my lifetime. It was the strongest show of unity that Americans have had since World War II. I was absolutely stunned to see people of all races, religions, and political persuasions coming together to talk, to care for each other, to stand up for America and to stand with each other.
There are a lot of lessons to be learned from 9/11, but the thing that I take back most is how patriotic Americans can be.
In memory of the 9/11 victims, my team and I are spending our day at the Community Food Bank in Birmingham as a day of service. We’re here to pack meals for those that are going hungry in Alabama. We have some 900,000 people that face hunger every day, and the Community Food Bank is one of many across this state that provide meals to help them.
Today is a day of remembrance, but it’s also a day of service. If you have not already, I’m asking you to honor the memory of the 9/11 first responders and take part of your day to volunteer at a local food bank in your community.
Let’s go forward today. Let’s remember the lives that were lost, and let’s remember their gifts to our country and to humanity.
