There are moments so profound that you can only understand them in fragments —
through what came before and what followed.

For every American — whether you were alive then or not — our nation has been
divided into before and after September 11, 2001. So much changed in that
moment. But also, so much was revealed.

We saw cruelty by those ravaged with hate. But something else was revealed as
well: The unconquerable American spirit, defined by love, courage and commitment
to our neighbors.

It was seen in those who, without hesitation, ran toward melting steel and
sounds of pain and anguish. It is seen in the families who survived and who are
committed to ensuring we never forget those nearly 3,000 souls.

Terror and terrorism has a goal. That goal is to try to conquer what makes
America, America.

But our commitment to tap into love over hatred makes us unconquerable.

Our commitment to remember makes us unconquerable.

But being unconquerable is about more than just a feeling. It is an act. Loving
in practice. Treating people with respect in practice. Talking about love,
justice, freedom, in practice.

For those who we lost 25 years ago, I am always reminded that we owe them
something.

I would suggest we owe them more than remembrance.

We owe them a life that is worth living. A life that is aligned with our values.
A life that ensures the American spirit remains unconquerable.

Today my hope is that we do more than just see the names of who we lost etched
in stone. Let us breathe new life into those memories through how we live, how
we serve, how we care for one another — not just today, but every day.

In solidarity,

— Malcolm
