Today, on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we reflect in solemn remembrance on the nearly 3,000 innocent lives taken from us and pay tribute to all who answered the call in our nation’s darkest hour.

For Virginia, September 11th is etched deeply into our soil at the Pentagon in Arlington, where 184 precious lives were lost. In those initial moments of pain and confusion, our public safety community—firefighters, police officers, EMTs, dispatchers, and members of Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and Virginia Task Force 1—did not hesitate. They ran straight toward danger to rescue, protect, and heal. Many carried invisible wounds home, others made the ultimate sacrifice, and some faced tragic illnesses long after the sirens fell silent.

True service is not measured in a single moment, but by the courage to answer the call and carry its heavy weight long after.

As the years pass, may we never allow time to dim their memory. May we continue telling their stories and teaching future generations what September 11th revealed about our Commonwealth and our nation: that when tested, we stand together; when others are in need, we answer; and even in our darkest moments, courage and selfless service will always light the way forward.

We will never forget.
