John, two weeks after catastrophic flash floods wiped out entire communities in Nepal, rescue efforts continue. More than 1,300 people have been killed, and at least 5,000 are missing. Helicopters are flying between affected areas to reach people cut off by floodwaters.
For children, the harm reaches far beyond the physical. Families are mourning loved ones, often with no idea how they died and no body to bury. Children have lost their schools, teachers and connection with their peers. Unaccompanied or separated children have become scattered across the flood-affected areas, with more than 3,600 people living in displacement sites.
All of this has been magnified by the significant cuts to worldwide foreign aid made in early 2025, leaving recovery efforts slow at best – and nonexistent at worst.

While the immediate, lifesaving response is still underway, the full impact of the disaster will take time to become clear. But we know that families and children have been impacted on a massive scale, and there won’t be a quick recovery.
Recovery is about more than rebuilding homes, schools and lifelines like clean water, power and medical care. Children also need support to process the life-altering trauma they’ve experienced and begin to feel safe again.

Because of donors who generously donate to our Children’s Emergency Fund during emergencies, we were able to move fast and set up a temporary office in Nuwakot to reach children and families with lifesaving care.
We’ve already reached over 2,200 children by:

Providing emergency shelter, clean water, blankets and hygiene kits

Creating two safe spaces in Nuwakot and preparing for another in Rashuwa, where children can learn, play and recover

Reuniting 69 children with their families in just the past few days
Every part of our response is designed to keep children, women and the most vulnerable safe from further harm.
