** Remembering Courage, Defending Freedom
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear John,

As our nation observes the 25th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, we remember how deeply California is connected to the events of that morning.

All four planes hijacked that day were headed to California. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 left Boston bound for LAX before terrorists flew them into the Twin Towers. American Airlines Flight 77 was traveling from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles before it was flown into the Pentagon.

And United Airlines Flight 93 was headed from Newark to San Francisco before its passengers heroically fought back against the hijackers and the plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Tom Burnett of San Ramon, Mark Bingham of San Francisco, and Todd Beamer — a Los Gatos High School graduate — and other Flight 93 passengers saved countless lives by preventing the terrorists from carrying out their plan.

Twenty-five years later, the bravery shown that day — by passengers, first responders and ordinary Americans — remains a powerful reminder of what people can do when courage is required.

Yesterday also marks one year since the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, who devoted his life to engaging his political opponents and defending the free exchange of ideas. Whatever our disagreements in American politics, answering ideas with violence has no place in a society built on liberty and open debate.

Freedom endures because ordinary people decide that some moments demand courage, even at great personal cost.

On this anniversary, we remember those who showed us what courage looks like. And we honor their legacy the best way we know how: by defending the individual rights that are the foundation of American liberty.
