A new kind of chip is being pushed into America’s phones. Most people will
never notice it. They’ll just buy the next model, activate it, and move on. But
behind the scenes, this tiny component could become part of a much larger shift
in how devices are secured, verified, and controlled.

But behind the scenes, this tiny component could become part of a much larger
shift in how devices are secured, verified, and controlled.

And when Washington quietly standardizes technology across hundreds of
millions of phones…

The companies behind it can see demand explode almost overnight.

I recorded a short briefing on the little-known chip supplier that could be
positioned right in the middle of this rollout.

Watch it here.

Nvidia Agreed to Buy Hugging Face for $12.9 Billion on September 2. The
Company That Sells the Chips Now Owns the Platform Where the Models Trained on
Them Are Distributed — and It Made the Purchase While Its Own Revenue Was
Growing 106% Year-on-Year.

Nvidia agreed on September 2, 2026 to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion,
extending its position from silicon into the layer where open models are hosted
and distributed. The purchase came as the company'srevenue to July 2026 rose
106% year-on-year with $108 billion guided for the following period, and
alongside Jensen Huang's August 26 framing of the business: now, compute is
revenue.

The strategic logic is vertical rather than financial. Hugging Face sits at
the distribution point for open-weight models — the place developers go to
find, download, and deploy them —which makes it an unusually direct lever on
what hardware those models are optimised for. Nvidia has spent the cycle
building influence at every adjacent layer:more than 50 venture investments in
AI companies in 2024 with a similar pace since, equity positions that have
grown substantially on its balance sheet during 2026,a partnership with SK
Group worth more than $500 billion in mutual business, and talks to backstop as
much as $250 billion of OpenAI compute leasing. The Hugging Face purchase
differs from those in kind rather than degree, becauseit is an outright
acquisition of infrastructure rather than a financing arrangement with a
customer — which means it does not carry the circularity critique that has
attached to the investment deals, but does raise a different question about a
dominant supplier owning the channel through which its customers' products
reach users.

For the investor, an acquisition is a cleaner signal than an investment, and
that is the reason to read this one closely. When a supplier invests in a
customer that then buys its products, the revenue effect is ambiguous;when it
buys a platform outright, the $12.9 billion is simply spent and the strategic
rationale has to stand on its own. The specific thing that makes this
consequential beyond Nvidia is the precedent for antitrust attention, since
ownership of a distribution layer by the dominant supplier of the underlying
hardware is the fact pattern regulators have historically examined most closely.
Whether that scrutiny arrives is unknowable from here — but it is the risk
that would matter more to the position than any quarterly revenue figure.
