It's early in the morning. The air is chilly, the sky is pale. The sun won't stream across the landscape for another thirty minutes. You shiver, you stretch, and deep down you know you're ready for this moment.
If you're a runner, you know the feeling of race day morning. And after the election on November 3rd, we're looking forward to running a virtual 5k or 10k with you. As Mark and I wrote last week ([link removed]) , you can join us by using the Couch to 5k app.
In any race, having a plan can not only get you to the start line but also to the finish. And just like the Couch to 5k app, we have a simple, manageable race plan to get Mark's campaign--which, by the way, is ultimately about all of us who want a different option in politics--across the finish line.
As Independents, we know what we're up against; we know the challenges of running a campaign. But those challenges present the possibility for freedom and creativity unavailable to candidates who have to align their ideas with a party structure.
Over the weekend I read a few pages of Meb Keflezighi's book, 26 Marathons ([link removed]) . Considering the level at which he performed, I was amazed by what he said about training and took a photo of this paragraph and sent it to Mark:
"Always pushing as hard as you can is more likely to lead to injury or being overtrained than to peak performance. The repeated right efforts are what bring results and confidence. When I'm asked the secret to my success, I often say there is no secret, but the key is consistency. If I regularly got in my key workouts of long runs, tempo runs, and intervals at a good-but-not-amazing level, I felt like I could compete with anybody in the world."
Meb wrote these words about his training plan leading up to winning a silver medal at the Athens 2004 Olympics.
What does all of this mean for our campaign? The race in the 24th Congressional District of Texas will come down to this: If voters want a different option, they very well may send Mark to represent them in the US House of Representatives.
Our focus in this campaign is therefore consistency, specifically putting in the consistent effort to connect with voters. If we do that, if voters want to be able to think and act freely outside of the confines of what the major parties are offering, then this campaign will be able to compete with any candidate in the field.
As a former staffer for a Member of Congress, I've handed talking points to Members of Congress on the House Floor, I've written summaries of legislation and distributed them among Member offices to gain support, and I've sat in dozens (hundreds?) of Member-level meetings with constituents; the Member I worked for had a unique ability to connect with the concerns of people he represented.
But there's one thing I hope everyone following Mark's candidacy understands: if the 24th District sends Mark to the Capitol, he will not only listen with compassion to the concerns of the people, but as a journalist and Independent, he could also far surpass what is expected of Members of Congress when it comes to building coalitions to bring about the unifying solutions our country needs.
We shouldn't have to settle for one party or the other. When you support Mark's campaign, you're creating a new path in politics, a new running route where we can all start working together.
Our race plan is simple: connect with voters, let them know they can support a campaign to bring the best ideas to the table, regardless of party. If that's what voters are looking for, the number of people who vote for Mark will hinge on the number of voters we can connect with during the campaign.
We'll be knocking on doors across the district through the election, and we'd love to have you join us. To get involved, email us at info[@]bauerfortexas.com.
It's early in the morning. The air is chilly, the sky is pale. We have 53 days to go until November 3. Run with us, and no matter the outcome, we'll fist bump after we cross the finish line together.
Stay independent,
Caleb Paxton
Campaign Manager
PS: Mark recently tweeted about occupational license reform ([link removed]) and women's health ([link removed]) . When we talk to voters, I'm excited to share more ways we can find new solutions and work together.
