Dear John,
August tends to be a slower month for a lot of Washington, but not here at WOLA. I'm just back from Spain, where I took part in the Summer Course on International Cooperation at the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo, co-organized with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).
As a member of AECID's Advisory Board, I joined colleagues from across the multilateral system, academia, governments, and civil society for a few days of discussion on the state of international cooperation and spoke about why that cooperation depends on multilateralism and democracy, without conditions that end up punishing the people it's meant to help.
Back in D.C., our office has been full of visitors. Partners from across the region are in town for this round of hearings at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), and it's been a busy, welcome stretch of meetings, briefings, and conversations with the people doing this work on the ground. It's a good reminder that while the news cycle may slow down in August, the struggles we work on don't take a break, and neither do our partners.
