Henrico Police Officer Trey Sutton was 24 when he was killed in the line of duty. In March 2022, 18-year-old Jeffrey Lankford crashed into his cruiser; Sutton died the next day.

Lankford pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, facing up to 20 years. Under a plea deal negotiated by my opponent Shannon Taylor's office, his punishment was two months of house arrest.

Even Taylor acknowledged the result fell short of what the Sutton family had hoped for.

Discretion still has to produce accountability. When a life is lost, it has to mean more than two months at home.

As a member of Congress, I will always stand with the men and women who protect our communities, and the victims who depend on our justice system to fight for them.
