1) It’s the Energy Prices, Stupid!
Consumer prices rose by 3.4% in August. Gas is closing in at $4 a gallon.
What’s remarkable about the just-released report is that prices for almost every other good and service beside energy has recorded tame price rises. Energy is up 16% but almost everything else is at or below 3% year over year inflation. Surprisingly, even food prices that are dependent on energy costs rose by less than 3%.
IF energy costs stabilize - and lord knows when that happens - we think we could see inflation fall to close to zero and even slight disinflation due to productivity improvements from AI and tech improvements.

2) Our Laugh or Cry Item of the Week
We mentioned earlier in the week that the new clownish British PM Andy Burnham blamed the UK’s sinking economy on… Margaret Thatcher. Of course, a sixth grader who learned anything about history knows that Thatcher rebuilt the British economy after years of malaise.
But then we see this in The New York Times:
“Inaugurated in 1981, President Ronald Reagan, aided by conservative Democrats in Congress, devoted two terms to slashing corporate taxes and deregulating industries. This was no standard shift in administration; Mr. Reagan was following a highly coordinated, yearslong blueprint drawn by a network of conservative intellectuals to systematically dismantle the New Deal consensus.”
In reality, Reaganomics reversed the economic collapse of the 1970s, cut inflation by two-thirds, caused a stock market boom, saw real incomes rise for every income group, and created a seven-year uninterrupted expansion in jobs and GDP.
How can these people guide us into a prosperous future when they don’t even understand the lessons of the past? Do they long for the good old days of Jimmy Carter and 11% inflation!

4) The Voter Fraud Cover Up
Whether it's arguing against the US Postal Service requiring a tracking bar on mail-in ballots or voter ID laws, the Left's mantra is that voter fraud is exaggerated.
They bury the evidence. Last month the US Census Bureau issued an analysis that concluded with "high confidence" that at least 24,000 noncitizens illegally voted in the very close 2020 election.
This week, the Department of Justice charged people in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and New Jersey with crimes related to noncitizen voting in the 2022 and 2024 elections.

California, which is the only state in the nation where it's illegal to even ASK people if they have an ID before they vote, is Ground Zero in another DOJ fraud probe.
This week, US Attorney Bill Essayli indicted petition circulator James Brass on charges he gave cash to people on Skid Row in Los Angeles so they would use the stolen identities of registered voters to qualify ballot initiatives. Three other circulators who worked for him have also been indicted.

A group called the Citizen Justice League, headed by videographer James O'Keefe, captured the wholesale fraud in voter signatures on videotape earlier this year. ([link removed])
But don’t worry: voter fraud is just a figment of Republicans’ imagination.

5) Why Is New York Hiding School Test Results?
Maybe because they are so embarrassingly miserable?
New York schools dropped off the US News high school rankings because the state refused to publish the Advanced Placement test scores. Now a once-well-ranked charter school is suing the state in an attempt to get its ranking back.
Eva Moskowitz, the founder and CEO of Success Academy Charter Schools, writes:
The state has censored AP reporting on the grounds of privacy, claiming that it "takes its responsibility to protect student data seriously." But as a U.S. News press release affirmed last week, the notion that the site ever requested "protected, individual student-level data" is "categorically false." U.S. News reports only aggregate data, which is why publication has been permitted in prior years.
The implications of the state's argument are astonishing. If accepted, government could restrict any number of stories based on student data, including articles in this publication about how 12th-grade math and reading scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress have recently hit their lowest levels in decades…
Why would New York engage in such a flagrant First Amendment violation? One reasonable interpretation: The public education sector is desperate to avoid accountability for its failures.
