Daniella’s parents were scared. In May, 10-year-old Daniella started showing symptoms of Ebola disease—fever, diarrhea, and muscle pain.
When her family took her to the hospital, the doctors there referred her to one of the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Ebola treatment centers (ETC) in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Our staff cared for Daniella for nine days.
There are no vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo virus at the root of the current Ebola disease outbreak. For Daniella, early detection, isolation and monitoring in our specialized ETC, and managing her symptoms were crucial to saving her life—and to protecting her family from disease transmission.
Since this outbreak was declared, MSF has mobilized expert staff and crucial supplies to respond to the urgent need. Supporters like you made it possible for our teams to rapidly set up ETCs, put strong prevention protocols in place, and keep other crucial health services going.
Every dollar supports our lifesaving efforts in DRC and over 70 countries around the world. Will you donate today to help power MSF’s independent medical aid and save lives? |
Rumors and misinformation about Ebola disease made Daniella’s treatment tense and anxious for her family, but when Daniella’s mother, Riziki Sekushago, saw her condition improving, she felt relieved. When Daniella’s lab results came back negative for Ebola disease, her parents were overjoyed: “I was finally able to hold Daniella in my arms and breathe again.”
Our staff are working with local communities to spread awareness of Ebola disease. Doctors and nurses are using their experience from treating previous outbreaks in DRC to build trust, spread lifesaving information, and respond effectively. These deep community relationships are crucial to stopping disease outbreaks in their tracks.
Your support makes it possible for us to do this important work. Eighty-five percent of every dollar goes straight to our independent medical aid programs in over 70 countries. That’s the power to respond to unpredictable emergencies and save lives as the situation evolves.
Your support allows MSF to continue showing up for our patients whenever and wherever they need us most. Make a gift today. Every dollar supports independent medical aid and helps save lives. |
