Apparently his bond comes before your safety. It's time to prioritize civilian safety CLICK to join our team We have a Sheriff who has thrown his weight behind the very bond policies that allowed Vernon Menifee, a murder suspect with alleged gang ties, walk free this week on his SIXTH bond. Vernon Menifee is known to pose grave danger to society. But for the last two years, the work of law enforcement officers has been subverted by judges playing fast and loose with lenient bond policies. Policies which have consistently been supported by current Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, who said on November 21, 2016: β€œA reformed bail system should fully address public safety concerns but also protect the dignity and civil rights of every individual - rich or poor - who comes into contact with the jail and my deputies." In practice, the bond policies that he so enthusiastically supports have FAILED to take into account public safety concerns. Quite the contrary, the policies have given repeat, violent criminals get-out-of-jail-free cards. But this is no game. Did you know that according to Houston Crime Stoppers Victims Advocate Andy Kahan, 61 people have been murdered by bonded out suspects in the last two years? Including a senior citizen as well as a pregnant woman and her unborn child. And yet, just 6 days ago the current Sheriff again expressed enthusiasm for the reformed bond system. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the report confirmed β€œcommon-sense criminal justice solutions” that have been successful in New Jersey and California can also work in Harris County. Successful?! What we have is a failing system that prioritizes criminals over the safety of Harris County citizens. In what world is it common sense for Vernon Menifee to freely roam the Harris County streets where you live? Ed Gozalez's world. He had his chance. It's time for change. It's time for a new Sheriff.
