Welcome, Mark Cordes!

We're pleased to announce our team is growing, and thrilled to introduce our new Executive Director, Mark Cordes (pronounced “CORD-ez”)! As a Sunset resident, Mark is a rider of the N, 7, and 28 lines.

Before joining our team, Mark worked around the Bay Area as a minister with churches trying to adapt to our evolving communities. Not a stranger to tough campaigns or the complexities of Bay Area politics, housing, and transit policies, he spent most of the last nine years leading the Trinity Berkeley Infill Development Program working to negotiate a deal with parishioners and a developer to build a mixed-use project on the church’s property.

I am honored to have been selected by the San Francisco Transit Riders Board of Directors to be the Executive Director. The chance to work with a terrific team focused on sustainability, safety, reliability, and championing the voices of riders in policy and planning was just the kind of challenge I was looking for in a new leadership role. SFTR’s commitment to equity and inclusion at all levels is exactly the kind of focus that makes a difference bringing together our broad and diverse community to improve our transit system for all.
~ Mark

Mark also brings strong operations and management skills from his past career launching and running new restaurants. He has been a Chef, General Manager, and Restaurant Entrepreneur, which equipped him to manage, adapt, teach, learn, and engage the challenges and opportunities of small, medium, and large businesses.

We're very excited to see Mark bring his experience and his passion for social justice to bear as the new Executive Director. His years of working in policy and managing complex teams for clear outcomes is just what our organization needs right now

We thank Cat Carter for all her hard work and efforts as Interim Executive Director, keeping SFTR on track during a particularly uncertain and difficult period. Cat is working closely with Mark to ensure a smooth transition and will continue her work in Operations and Communications. Cat and Mark share a dedication to the organization’s mission and an excitement for continuing to build the future of transit advocacy in San Francisco.

There’s so much more to Mark than we can put into an email, but we hope you’ll all help us welcome Mark to the SFTR family!

Sincerely,
Board Directors Dominique, Thea, Steve, Mike, Peter, Camille, and Serena
