BREAKING: VICTORY FOR MISSOURI VOTERS!

Supreme Court blocks new gerrymandered map

Team, between all the news alerts and different court rulings, you may have some questions about what’s actually happening with Missouri’s map — and we’ve got answers.

Here’s the bottom line: Because Missourians kept fighting back for fairness, Republicans’ new gerrymandered map will NOT take effect this November.

This outcome was far from a given. It only happened because the fair maps movement refused to back down. (Hint: That’s our plan in every state where Republicans try to rig the rules you can support that work with a donation here.)

So what just happened?

The Supreme Court ruled that Missouri Republicans’ new gerrymander cannot be used in the midterm election. This is the map lawmakers drew to try to squeeze out (read: steal) an extra U.S. House seat for themselves by splitting up Kansas City and diluting the voting power of Black Missourians.

Which map will be in effect for November?

The map that was passed in 2022! Not the new GOP gerrymander. Donald Trump and Republicans failed to eliminate a Democratic member of the state’s congressional delegation. They even tried to ignore the Missouri Supreme Court ruling last week that stopped the map from taking effect — but the U.S. Supreme Court shut that down earlier today.

Wasn’t there also going to be a referendum about the new gerrymander? What’s happening with that now?

The referendum will be on the ballot in November, despite Republicans’ attempts to sabotage it. Voters will have a chance to reject the new gerrymander and keep it from taking effect in future years.

What does this mean beyond November?

It puts Republican map manipulators on notice: their gerrymanders will not go unanswered. Our movement will keep challenging this cynical Republican power grab, state by state. We won’t win every fight, but we will fight everywhere. The fair maps movement needs all of us — so if you’re ready to take action today, make a donation and help protect our democracy from ruthless gerrymandering and relentless attacks on voting rights.
