Over the past six months, I’ve seen members of my family relocate for care needs.
My grandma moved in with my aunt, and my other two grandparents moved from Wisconsin to where we live in Illinois – uprooting their lives so they have easier access to the care they need.
Care and caregiving can look many different ways in our lives, and it truly spans across generations.
For me, that looks like checking in on my grandparents Bob, Helen and Lucille, or days spent with my brother Chris, who has autism.
I’m sure you can relate, John. This is Intergeneration Month, and with Grandparents’ Day right around the corner, we’re taking this opportunity to celebrate our connections across families and communities.

In my family, we depend on each other – and we’re lucky to do so. Family caregiving is a labor of love, but it shouldn’t be the only option, families shouldn’t have to uproot their lives to receive or give the care that is needed.
Across the country, millions of caregivers and care recipients are being put in impossible situations because of a lack of care programs and support.
I share my care story because I never want anyone to feel alone, and because I want to celebrate the joy that comes from caregiving too – from Parkinson’s boxing classes with my 93-year-old grandmother to family reunions with all 16 of us grandchildren (and even 14 great-grandkids!).
We’re not alone – there are millions of us who give and receive care every day.
