In the middle of the worst Cyclosporiasis outbreak on record (with cases up 15-fold compared to last year), a beef recall after it was imported from Argentina and sold to Americans without being inspected at all, and near-constant recalls on lettuce, blueberries, eggs, cheese, mangoes, and more – Donald Trump thinks we should eliminate food inspection regulations entirely.

Less oversight and no food safety checkpoints are exactly the opposite of what we need right now.

The three main agencies responsible for food safety – the FDA, USDA, and CDC – have already undergone massive federal funding cuts thanks to Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and RFK Jr.

→ The FDA has lost 20% of its workforce, the CDC has lost 25%, and the USDA has lost 27%.

→ The national advisory committee that used to advise our federal agencies on how to prevent food contamination has been completely disbanded.

→ The CDC used to have 11 scientists tracking food parasites; now it has only three.

Our federal agencies meant to protect public health are already operating with a skeleton crew, and now Trump wants to gut what’s left.

As a doctor, I want to be direct with you: food safety regulations are more than just a bunch of red tape and headaches for producers. They’re why you can go to a grocery store and trust that what you put in your body won’t make you sick. They’re why massive Cyclospora outbreaks like the one from this summer are typically rare and preventable.

We’ve already seen the impact of these federal budget cuts on Americans as thousands more people have gotten sick compared to previous years. Eliminating these programs will cost lives, period.

This is what happens when you put people in charge of our government and public health who don’t believe in science and who don’t listen to the experts.

The only way to rein in this administration’s public health failures is to take back control of Congress in November and elect Democrats up and down the ticket.
