Jack, I hate fundraising emails that tell you the sky is falling.

You know the ones. Some existential emergency. If you don’t give $10 RIGHT NOW, everything we’ve built is supposedly going to disappear.

I hate them because most of the time, they’re bullshit.

So I’m not going to tell you the sky is falling. Daily Kos isn’t shutting down tomorrow. But I am going to tell you something I haven’t said this plainly before:

It’s been several years since Daily Kos turned a profit, and we cannot continue operating that way indefinitely.

You already support Daily Kos. You’ve decided this place is worth paying for, and your donations have helped keep us here. I’m grateful for that.

But we need to change the trajectory we’re on. We need more of our supporters to become monthly donors.

Monthly donations give us something one-time contributions can’t: predictability. They let us plan instead of wondering whether the next fundraising drive will make up the difference.

I’m not going to slowly bleed Daily Kos dry until we’ve spent our last dollar. If our readers no longer believe this work is worth supporting, eventually I have to listen to them.
