Angie Nixon learned the power of organizing and the meaning of solidarity from her mother, a union member who worked two jobs just to keep food on the table. That lived experience shaped Angie into the resilient advocate, fierce union organizer, and proven fighter for Floridians that she is today.
She grew up attending Jacksonville’s public schools, where she was bused across town because her predominantly Black neighborhood school didn’t have the resources it deserved. That’s exactly where her power as a leader comes from: she knows what it looks like when working families get the short end of the stick, because she was one of them.
Long before there was a seat to run for, Angie was doing the hard work of building power in her own community.
She co-founded Melanin Market to support local businesses, opened Natalie’s Nook with her daughter to fight food insecurity in her own neighborhood, and later opened Cafe Resistance, a bookstore and coffee shop in Jacksonville that offers tutoring, mental health workshops, a food pantry, and a safe space for teens to learn and thrive. Angie’s history in her community proves she’s always had the instincts to take action. She doesn’t wait for permission — she sees a need, and meets it.
As a State Representative, Angie has expanded childcare access for thousands of families, taken on a major grocery chain for price gouging Floridians at the register, introduced legislation to unmask the ICE agents terrorizing immigrant communities across the state, and led the fight against Ron DeSantis’ racist redistricting maps (even bringing out a megaphone on the House floor to speak up for Florida voters).
Her opponent, Ashley Moody, was never even elected to this Senate seat. She was hand-picked by Trump’s buddy Ron DeSantis to fill it. Moody’s tenure as Attorney General was mired in misappropriated Medicaid funds to the tune of $10 million. And in the Senate, she voted to let ACA subsidies expire, a decision that’s already caused over 440,000 Floridians to lose their health coverage. She’s spent her entire career answering to power — not the people of Florida.
Angie is different. She’s fighting for a future shaped by teachers, nurses, parents, and workers. In the Senate, she’ll join the progressive coalition fighting for Medicare for All, push for universal childcare, a national rent freeze and moratorium on evictions, stronger union protections, and a $25 federal minimum wage. She’ll rally hard to get corporate money out of politics and rein in the tech companies and data center giants driving up costs for working people.
If she wins in November, she’ll be the first Black person Florida has ever elected to the U.S. Senate.
And listen John, I said it before and I’ll say it again: we’re not writing Florida off. Nobody is pretending that this will be an easy fight. But Angie has already accomplished something enormous this cycle, upsetting the establishment-backed opponent who outraised her more than 16:1 — proof that the many really can beat the money. She’s truly an exciting candidate with the power to shake up the state of this race. She just needs the resources and a strong grassroots movement behind her to win.
