Michael Douma’s new reader The Liberal Approach to the Past attempts to uncover the often obscured tradition of liberal history, a broad amalgamation of thinkers who vary in their conclusions but follow, according to Douma’s assessment, four core principles. Freed from the constraints of utopian ends and deterministic rules, liberal historians seek to understand why liberty flourishes and, most importantly, how to maintain it.
