John, Last year, Texas Republicans kicked off a national mid-decade redistricting crisis by passing an extreme new gerrymander. But this November, we can deliver some poetic justice — unseating extremists who pushed that aggressive redraw by electing fair maps champions to key offices, where they can stop future gerrymanders. Polls consistently show the Texas governor’s race within reach — with one-point margins in three polls since July. And we can gain real ground in the state House with enough outreach and elbow grease. But we need to go all out in the next eight weeks to get out the vote for Democracy Defenders.
Yes, John: we can flip Texas this November. And it would make a huge difference in the fight for fair maps. In Texas, the governor can veto new gerrymanders. We've endorsed Democracy Defender Gina Hinojosa in her tight race against Republican incumbent and notorious map manipulator Greg Abbott. He showed no hesitation in capitulating to Trump’s demands that Texas redraw its maps in 2025 to give the GOP another five seats. He’s got to go. We’ve also endorsed 75 other Democracy Defenders running for the Texas State House, which helps draw congressional and state legislative maps. Although Republicans currently hold an 88-62 majority in that chamber, we can narrow that margin, invest in the long-term fight to take back control, and make it that much harder for the GOP to pass extreme new gerrymanders. A small number of races in states like Texas will decide whether Republicans continue to hold — or expand — unchecked power over redistricting ahead of the 2031 post-census redraw. They’re desperate to win so they can continue to cheat. State-level races are the primary defense of democratic accountability and representative government.
