As we head into the latter half of September, Houston DSA is on the move with plenty of events and organizing opportunities for you to sink your teeth into, from our Chapter orientation - for those of you new to the Chapter or looking for ways to get plugged in! - to an exciting reading group collaboration with JVP Houston to a members-only Intro to Jiu-Jitsu and Community Self-Defense!

September General Meeting - September 10th

Houston DSA’s monthly general meetings are where the membership comes together to be in community and discuss the activities going on within our own chapter and the national DSA. It is also where we conduct chapter business like elections, votes, or resolutions.

We will meet in person as well as online! We are meeting at 2506 Sutherland St. Houston, TX 77023. Following the facility’s regulations, you are encouraged to wear a mask while indoors.

If you prefer to join the meeting online, follow the instructions after RSVPing for Zoom registration.

General meetings are open to non-members and a great way to learn about the work we are doing! However, participation in certain activities like elections and votes is reserved for Houston DSA members only (via email ballot). You can visit dsausa.org/join to become a member today.

Houston DSA Orientation - September 13th

Join us on Sunday, September 13th, from 1:00-2:30pm, for our Chapter orientation! You'll learn about DSA, what we do, and how you can get involved in the fight for a brighter future. We'll outline our Chapter's structure, highlight some of our past work, and dive into what we're working on right now.

Here Where We Live is Our Country Reading Group - September 13th

On September 13th, JVP Houston and Houston DSA will host a reading group on Molly Crabapple's new book Here Where We Live Is Our Country, a popular history of the Jewish Bund, a secular, anti-Zionist labor movement in Eastern Europe at the turn of the 20th Century. Join us to share your thoughts on the work and discuss how Bundist analysis resonates with the contemporary Jewish left and what lessons this story offers to socialist, anti-imperialist struggles today.

This is a weekly session on Tuesdays at 20:00 MEX/CST for organizers interested in practicing their Spanish/English language skills. Everyone is welcome no matter what organization you’re a member of! We’ll go into breakout rooms to practice with other people then come together to debrief. Our goal is to build enough proficiency and confidence in each participant to have simple conversations in Spanish. If it’s your first time please arrive ten minutes early to hear the instructions! Make sure to review the scripts and vocabulary lists to prepare in advance.

Board Game Night - September 19th

Join Houston DSA at Coral Sword (1318 Telephone Rd, Houston, TX 77023) for our Board Game Night on Sunday, September 19th, at 7:00pm! Socialize with comrades while playing games. Members and non-members alike are welcome.

Intro to Jiu-Jitsu and Community Self Defense (Members Only) - September 20th

Join us for a jiu-jitsu based self-defense course for beginners! The first hour will focus on learning a self-defense sequence, and we'll have a half hour afterwards for more experienced practitioners to spar.

There is a $12 fee; financial assistance is available if necessary.

Please wear gym attire with sandals and bring a water bottle. If you are interested in sparring, feel free to bring a gi and mouthguard as well!

Are you looking for ways to get more involved with the chapter?

Join us on Wednesday, September 9, from 4:00-5:00pm, for our virtual Houston Freedom Act Campaign building meeting! This is a campaign working meeting to work through as much of the campaign plan as possible, including VAN, Solidarity Tech, designing and print literature, and more!

Our Immigrant Justice Working Group is committed to fighting for immigrant workers and the abolishment of ICE. After a year of organizing, we helped pass the Immigration Ordinance in April 2026 to limit collaboration with ICE until it was gutted by City Council under threat by Governor Greg Abbott. We have informed businesses about their rights, provided mutual aid to immigrant workers, and engaged hundreds of people in canvassing, testimony, protest, and organizing.

Join us on Wednesday, September 9th, at 6:15pm at Beikos Cafe (6800 Southwest Fwy Ste C, Houston, TX 77074) or online via Zoom at 6:30pm to get engaged in our work to pressure City Council, fundraise for mutual aid, and directly organize immigrant communities.

Join our Labor Working Group on Tuesday, September 15th at Bohemeo’s (708 Telephone Road, Houston, TX 77023) from 7:00-8:30pm for our monthly meeting! We’ll share updates on local labor campaigns, plan upcoming actions, and discuss strategies for building working-class power in Houston.

Whether you’re a union member, a workplace organizer, or just starting to get involved, this is a welcoming space to connect, learn, and take action in solidarity with workers across our city.

Our Stop Fueling Genocide Working Group, will be meeting Thursday, September 17th from 7:00-9:00pm at Mazajj Organic Coffee (5549 Richmond Ave). Join us in person or online to discuss our ongoing campaign to boycott Chevron for providing 80% of the energy needs of the IOF. With the ongoing Genocide of the Palestinians, the War in Iran and the invasion of Lebanon, we need to keep the pressure up and educate our community!
