Firefighters from a hotshot crew returned to the spot fire on Snowshoe Mountain and mopped up heavy fuel that were still burning. Additional handcrews worked to finish the last piece of control line in Disappointment Creek. Across the rest of the fire area, firefighters and heavy equipment operators are repairing control line built during suppression efforts, backhauling equipment, repairing fences and fixing roads. Firefighters are demobilizing as work is completed.
With suppression repair mostly complete around Palmer Mountain and Loomis, heavy equipment operators worked north on Chopaka Mountain Road yesterday. They focused on removing berms created by dozers, building water bars to prevent erosion and chipping cut brush. Fire-resistant structural wrap was removed from signs and structures in Chopaka Campground. Equipment operators did similar work on Douglas Mountain moving towards Bald Butte. This repair work was nearly completed around Fishlake and equipment is moving to Muckamuck Mountain.
Additional excavators arrive today to assist with suppression repair work near Disappointment Creek. Heavy equipment will also be moved into the Iron Gate area with a processor. The processor will begin moving trees cut for fire line construction to decks so they don’t create future fire hazards. Other equipment will continue cleaning up debris piles, slash and logs on Forest Road 3820 and 3810. Road graders are patching large potholes on Toats Coulee Road.
Fire managers with Southwest Complex Incident Management Team 3 are preparing for transition of the incident to a Type 3 team. Fire managers from the Northwest Washington Team 1, a Type 3 Team, are traveling to Tonasket and will begin arriving today.
