The health care situation in the United States continues to get worse: a
new report projects that health benefit costs per employee will rise by
11% next year unless benefits are cut.

That’s a staggering statistic — and the largest single-year increase since
2003.

Health care spending is skyrocketing, and recent Republican budget cuts
are only making it worse. The path forward isn’t to pass more subsidies or
tinker at the edges of plan design. It is the fragmented structure of the
system itself that is the driver of uncontrolled rises in cost. The only
real solution is Medicare for All.

Medicare for All would make health care a guaranteed right, not something
tied to your job. Employer-based health insurance is a runaway train about
to run off the tracks, and even some large employers are saying enough is
enough.^1 It adds huge costs to businesses, keeps workers stuck in jobs
they don’t like just for their benefits, and is susceptible to exploding
costs that get passed on to workers.

Our leaders have to move past simply restoring the Affordable Care Act,
which doesn’t address the crisis in employment-based health care. The only
way to truly fix our broken system is to pass Medicare for All — a
single-payer system where health care is guaranteed to all.

We’re at a critical point for the future of our care. 2029 could be a
once-in-a-generation chance for us to pass sweeping health care reform,
and we need to make sure our politicians are fighting for Medicare for All
and nothing less.
