John —
Centuries of systemic racism has infected our current health care system and continues to result in disastrous health outcomes for Black and brown Americans — especially during COVID-19.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Black folks make up 13.4% of our nation’s population. Yet, Black people are three to four times more likely to contract COVID-19 and one to two times more likely to die from it than white people.
It’s extremely alarming.
African Americans are disproportionately affected by chronic health issues, infant mortality, maternal mortality, police brutality and are least likely to have insurance to help cover the costs of the care they need.
One thing is clear: Racism is a public health issue. That’s why Barbara along with Rep. Ayanna Pressley and Sen. Elizabeth Warren introduced the Anti-Racism in Public Health Act to confront the public health impacts of structural racism through two new programs within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
These programs would study the health impacts of structural racism and develop race-conscious public health approaches to reverse disparities that have harmed communities of color for far too long.
John, structural racism exists in every aspect of our country and has put too many lives at risk. The Anti-Racism in Public Health Act must be passed. But we need your help to do it. So we’re asking:
Will you co-sign your name in support of the Anti-Racism in Public Health Act? There is power in numbers and we couldn’t possibly get this passed without supporters like you standing with us.
Thanks for being such a critical part of this fight to end systemic racism. Together, we’ll create a nation that is equal and values the health and well-being of all of its citizens, especially those of our most vulnerable communities.
